Joel Phelps (1755-1838) served in the Massachusetts militia as a sergeant in Captain John McKinstry's Company, Colonel John Paterson's Regiment; Captain Hall's Company, Colonel Henry Sherbourn Regiment; and Captain Stephen Hardin's Company, Colonel Zebulon Butler's Regiment. He also served as quartermaster in General Burgoyne's Army of Virginia. Joel Phelps was born in Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania on July 16, 1755. He married Anner Baney and they had twelve children. He moved to Oakland County, Michigan in 1837. Joel Phelps died February 22, 1838, and is buried in Rose Corners Cemetery in Rose Township, Oakland County, Michigan.
